Back home, I make my way to the mansionâs library where I know Elias and Cain will be waiting for me. Iâve texted them both to meet me there but have left the details about the warlockâs death out of the message. Some things are just better left said in person, and discussing our next move with Aria wasnât something I wanted to type out. Especially when Elias was known for rarely ever carrying his phone. The man spends most of his days running naked through the woods, after all.
Once Cain saw the text, there was no doubt heâd find Elias and bring him along. This was important. For us all.
I still havenât told anyone about Maverickâs note or Luciferâs ridiculous kill request, and part of me feels guilty for keeping it from them, but the other part feels like they donât need to know. Iâm not taking the deal, so what does it matter? Cain never wants to hear anything damning about his siblings anyway, even from me, and Iâd rather not deal with his wrath or excuses. It just isnât worth it.
Now my focus is on Aria, and what Iâve foundâwell, didnât findâwhile at her apartment. Without the warlock to question or any of Ariaâs birth paperwork left behind, weâre on our own to figure out what the next step is going to be.
I find Cain and Elias right where I need them.
Cain looks anxious already, and for him, that means short-tempered. He stands in the center of the library, arms crossed and lips pressed in a tight line. âWhat is it? What did you find?â
Elias is more bored than anything else. Heâs in one of the reading chairs, legs spread wide and picking twigs out of his hair. âThis better be good.â
âThe warlock is dead,â I reply bluntly. âRamos and I found him strangled with his eyes gouged out.â
As expected, neither Cain nor Elias are moved by the manâs death. They wait for me to continue to the more important parts.
âThe place was ransacked. Papers all over the floor, all of them pertaining to Aria in some way, shape, or fashion. But the ones we needed were gone.â
âWhat do you mean, gone?â Cain asks. âNo birth certificate? Nothing with a mention of her parents or a last name?â
I shake my head. âNot a damn thing. Weâll have to find another way. Maybe we can contact a previous foster family?â I reach into my jacket and pull out all the papers I collected at the apartment, just in case something could be of use. Passing them over to Cain, I say, âThereâs a police report in there, too. Maybe we can call in some favors at Glensideâs precinct and pull some strings there.â
Cain quickly flips through the stack. âWe may have to.â
âSo wait. Someone killed the warlock to get information on Aria?â Elias sits up, suddenly interested.
âI would assume they got the information before they killed him, but yes. It seems to be that way.â
Elias snorts in annoyance.
As usual, Cainâs deep in his thoughts.
